Poland scraps tax law to attract construction workers
Published 21 Apr 2008

The Polish Government is to issue a tax amnesty for Poles working abroad in an effort to attract construction workers home to develop essential infrastructure projects. Their key target is Poles with construction jobs in the UK and Ireland.

Under current tax law Poles working in Ireland and the United Kingdom are liable for tax in Ireland or the UK and Poland, turning many into tax exiles. The Polish government has also pledged that as well as a five-year amnesty for tax dodgers, Poles who paid both taxes would be given a rebate by the Polish inland revenue.

Officials have estimated that Poland needs 200,000 construction workers if it is to get stadia and facilities ready for the 2012 European Football Championship, which it is co-hosting with Ukraine. The Polish government also wants to use the event to make massive investments in transport infrastructure.
